You Know it’s Friday When…

…both the BBC the Wall Street Journal have problems creating a headline that makes sense (read the highlighted headlines):

Whoever Fukuda is, he doesn’t exist yet…but he’s next in line. This is waaaay to existential for a Friday morning.

Me & My Humble Abode

After graduating (which, for you loyalists out there, is the reason this place has been so quiet) I began the daunting task of moving me and my accumulated stuff from the dorm room to the new apartment. Providing further dauntage was the acquisition, assembly, and arrangement of new furniture, which took the better part of 10 days. But I’m pleased to announce that all has been made well in the new physical mounty’s corner, right up to the neighborhood kids playing football in the street as I pulled in today. Yes, you who know me know my passion for football. I love the game. I love playing it; I love watching it; I love the endless debates about rivalries, draft picks (oh, and Ed, experience should have told you to keep your trap shut [2/3 of the way down]), and how injuries are going to affect the coming game. The Quartet’s former bass singer felt led to pursue a doctorate degree at Clemson, so he is no longer traveling with us, but he and I used to have many fun arguments about how our teams, division rivals Philly and Washington, were going to fare against the opponent du jour. So obviously I love the sport. I just don’t love it enough to find joy and satisfaction in finding the blessed pigskin on the other side of my car windshield. But then again, this is Taylors, and there’s pretty much nothing to do in Taylors except wish you were in Greenville, Spartanburg, Anderson, Simpsonville, or any other of the myriad larger towns in the area, so I can easily forgive the guys tossing the ball.

Lastly, but not leastly, [your profound closing thought here!]

It’s That Time Again

Yes, friends, it’s time for me to get myself deeply involved in another controversy raging around the ship we call Fundamentalism. Perhaps you’re local to the Greenville, SC area. Perhaps you’ve heard that Greenville “native” Chris Sligh is one of the finalists on American Idol, the overblown talent show where aspiring pop singers put their spin (or not) on old (or not) rock songs (or not) in the hopes of landing a large recording contract and becoming famous (or not). If you live in Greenville and didn’t know this, we may safely assume you live under a rock in the Pumpkintown area. (Pumpkintown, BTW, is a nice place. Just don’t blink driving through it or you might miss it entirely.)

An Object Lesson

Church Built for 150 MPH Winds Demolished

Something about this story immediately drew my thoughts to Matthew 7:26-28 [+/-]. I don’t know anything about the church, what they believe, etc., so don’t automatically assume I’m proclaiming divine judgment on the church. After all, we understand from Rev. 2-3 [+/-] that God has a message for every church that calls itself by His name, whether or not the purists of the day would look at that particular church as “right” or not, so it’s possible this was sent as a wake-up call. We don’t know and can’t assume. But like the folks at the Tower of Babel, the Lady Lake Church stands (or not) as a testimony that God will have His way, regardless of how sure and solid we think we’ve built things up.
