Mark your Calendars

Saturday at 7p, the BJU Chamber Singers will be presenting “Be My Love,” a Valentine’s-themed concert of love and marriage. We kind of go in reverse, starting with two Monteverdi pieces on the death of loved ones and ending with a Tavener piece on marriage (Greek, to be specific). There is no charge and no tickets are required. Just come to the War Memorial Chapel on-campus around 6:30 or so and prepare to enjoy the sound goodness.

Sweet, Beautiful Coffee

I made my boss angry at work today. Around 4:30 I couldn’t stay awake any longer, so I brewed myself what turned into one of the best cups of coffee I’ve had in a long while. (It was Ethiopian Sidamo from Starbucks, for those interested.) Trouble was, my boss smelled it and came running with his mug. Oops - only made one cup. I ended up taking a 3/4 mug and giving him some “flavoring” for tomorrow’s cup. I guess it’s like one of those sourdough bread things - always have a bit of starter at the bottom of the bowl before putting new stuff in.

Birthday Shoutout

mounty’s corner would like to officially extend birthday greetings to John Williams, American film score composer and noted conductor. Mr. Williams is 75 years old today! In honor of his life and work, I suggest you find a good film score or Boston Pops recording and listen to it. Some suggestions:

  • The Patriot (which is what I have going right now)
  • Any Star Wars soundtrack
  • Hook
  • Saving Private Ryan
  • John Williams: By Request (some of the best themes performed by the Boston Pops)

Feel free to leave your favorite JW score in the comments section, too!

An Object Lesson

Church Built for 150 MPH Winds Demolished

Something about this story immediately drew my thoughts to Matthew 7:26-28 [+/-]. I don’t know anything about the church, what they believe, etc., so don’t automatically assume I’m proclaiming divine judgment on the church. After all, we understand from Rev. 2-3 [+/-] that God has a message for every church that calls itself by His name, whether or not the purists of the day would look at that particular church as “right” or not, so it’s possible this was sent as a wake-up call. We don’t know and can’t assume. But like the folks at the Tower of Babel, the Lady Lake Church stands (or not) as a testimony that God will have His way, regardless of how sure and solid we think we’ve built things up.
